Giving Back

Proud of our Community

The St. John’s Port Authority is proud to play an active role in the community in which we live and work.

The St. John’s Port Authority believes in giving back. We are thrilled to participate in a number of programs each year that make a positive impact on the community in which we live and work. We invest annually in the leaders of tomorrow with our scholarship program — to date, we are proud to have given over $137,500 in educational funds to deserving students. For over 20 years, the Port’s annual Harbour Lights Christmas fundraiser has generated funds for the School Lunch Association to assist in preparing more than 124,000 meals per year for distribution throughout 30 area schools. The Port hosts a number of exciting and interactive events throughout the year. For example, partnering with the Sound Symposium, Cruise St. John’s helps orchestrate the Harbour Symphony, which gathers musicians together to play ships’ horns as an ensemble, entertaining all those within hearing distance with specially-composed pieces by renowned artists. From yacht races to special commemorations, we are proud to be involved in community-building activities of all kinds.

Below are just a few highlights of our involvement.

Harbour Lights Fundraiser

The St. John’s Port Authority’s annual “Harbour Lights” Christmas fundraiser generates funds to assist the School Lunch Association in preparing and providing access to hot, nutritious meals to area school children.

In 2023, this campaign successfully raised $12,000 which allowed the School Lunch Association to provide more than 4,000 hot, nutritious lunches to primary and elementary school children throughout the Northeast Avalon, regardless of their family circumstances.

School Lunch

The St. John's Port Authority is a proud sponsor of the School Lunch Program. Watch the video below as Sean Hanrahan of the St. John's Port Authority discusses the SJPA's support for the School Lunch Association, as well as its mission and future direction.

Investing in Youth

The St. John’s Port Authority awards annual scholarships across the province to deserving students who are beginning post-secondary studies.

Special Events

Throughout the year we host a full calendar of events. In a city that is a hotspot for local art and culture, the port is a unique backdrop for a variety of music events, television broadcasts and film shoots. We participate in the signature event of the internationally renowned Sound Symposium, an event when the Harbour Symphony features original music composed for and performed by ships’ horns.
